5 things you should do after an Auto Accident

Posted By Scott Hughes || 11-Jan-2011

1.     STOP: If you are involved in an automobile accident, you are required by law to stop. If you fail to stop, you could be charged with a hit and run or leaving the scene of an accident and be subject to criminal prosecution. Pull over to a safe area, out of traffic. If necessary, call an ambulance if anyone is injured.

2.     GET INFORMATION: Obtain the name, address, phone number, driver’s license number, car make and model, insurance information, and license plate number of the other driver. Try and record as much information of the accident as possible. If you have a camera available, take pictures of the accident scene and damage to the vehicles before the evidence disappears.

3.     REPORT THE ACCIDENT: Report the accident to local law enforcement so that they may investigate the accident and file a report. The information provided in the police report can serve as beneficial evidence for any later claims.

4.     DO NOT VOLUNTEER THAT YOU ARE TO BLAME: Even if you feel that you caused the accident, do not offer to take the blame, pay for all the damages, or agree to sign any statement that states you are at fault without first consulting an experienced attorney.

5.     CONTACT AN ATTORNEY: Consult with an attorney as soon as possible after the accident and before speaking with an insurance company’s lawyer about the accident. If you believe you have caused the accident or are being sued, it is important to obtain legal representation and contact your insurance company.
